My (Serious) Obsession: The Office

You may have a slight inkling that I am a fan of the TV show The Office. But, you probably don’t know just how deep my love goes. I started watching about 7 years ago after someone recommend I watch the British version. I soon switched to the American one, mostly because I am a huge fan of Steve Carrell – and after one episode, he proved my obsession worthy.

Thanks to my slightly obsessive personality, it wasn’t long before I was watching The Office every single night. No joke. Soon, I started to fall asleep with it on in the background because I liked hearing their voices. It seems weird I guess, but it was comforting when I lived alone to hear all my “friends” talk! No judgement. That sounds hilarious to me now, but it’s truly how I felt.

Pretty soon, playing it at bedtime wasn’t enough and I started putting it on as soon as I got home. Whether cooking, cleaning, getting ready, The Office was on and my friends were there! It was a party! I eventually became so obsessed that I’d travel with the show – bringing my laptop everywhere I went and placing it on the nightstand so I could still tune in. As a matter of fact, when I started dating Keith, I vividly remember asking him if it was OK if I brought my computer over so I could listen to my show. Of course, he said sure.

Fast forward 5 years after first dating Keith, and we now watch it EVERY single night before we go to bed, and then I also put in headphones and listen as I fall asleep. The only change has been that I prefer my iPad to my laptop now – technology changes, my favourite things do NOT.

I don’t know what it is about this show: the humour, the characters, the writing – I just love it so much. I could tell you literally anything about it; ask any of my friends. I know the smallest details, from when characters came into the season, when they left, the names of characters who only appeared in one or two episodes, the chronological order of who Michael dated, you name it!

And in case you’re wondering, Michael is by far my favourite character – with Dwight coming in at a close second. My favourite episode is probably ‘Training Day’, with guest star Will Ferrell as Deangelo Vickers, Michael’s would-be replacement. My favourite scene is when Dwight questions Kelly after he finds what he thinks is weed in the office (turns out, it was just caprese salad, of course).

I felt the need to explain how big this obsession of mine is mostly because I know I can’t be the only one. I’m not saying everyone wants to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of Dunder Mifflin, but hey, it works for me!
